House Minority Whip On Whether Democrats Would ‘Save’ McCarthy From Ousting: ‘This Is Not About [His] Job’

'The way out of this is to live up to his word,' Katherine Clark told 'CNN This Morning'

House Minority Whip Katherine Clark, D-Mass., would not say whether Democrats would "save" House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., if some in his party follow through with threats to oust him.

CNN reported on discussions among Democrats this week about potential scenarios where they could keep McCarthy in his leadership role if there were a motion to vacate, including voting to table the resolution.

"CNN This Morning" co-host Phil Mattingly pushed Clark on such a scenario in a Thursday interview. Clark urged McCarthy to stick to a federal budget deal agreed to with President Joe Biden over the summer.

McCarthy has since faced members of his own party like Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., pushing for far more spending cuts and resisting continuing motions as the end of the fiscal year looms at the end of the month.

"[McCarthy's job] is not what is really at stake here. This is not about Kevin McCarthy's job. It's about his leadership and right now there is a void of leadership," Clark said.

The House Democrat accused McCarthy of being "only concerned with his own power" and called for him to "live up to his word."

"The way out of this is to live up to his word," she said.

Pressed again on whether Democrats would aid McCarthy in a motion to vacate, Clark dismissed the threats as a "parlor game" and distraction from a potential government shutdown.

"Talk about whether democrats would save his job is frankly irrelevant," she said.
