The House Freedom Caucus on Sunday blasted the bipartisan agreement reached for a top-line spending number to avoid a government shutdown.

Negotiators agreed on a top-line government spending number of $1.59 trillion, the same lid agreed to under a deal struck last year between President Joe Biden and former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif.

House Freedom Caucus members, who have consistently called for spending cuts, were not happy.

"Don't believe the spin," the caucus said in a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. "This is a total failure."

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., acknowledged that the deal "will not satisfy everyone" in a letter to Republican colleagues, but maintained that it provides a path to reach conservative policy priorities.
