House Foreign Affairs Chair McCaul Says He Wants to Interview Psaki, Kirby on Afghanistan Withdrawal

McCaul accused the messages sent by the White House during the fall of Kabul to be 'so different from what was happening on the ground'

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Tenn., on Sunday said that his committee is interested in interviewing former White House press secretary Jen Psaki and former assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs John Kirby about the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan two years ago.

CNN's Jake Tapper asked McCaul about the fall of Kabul and questioned which members of the Biden Administration the chairman was interested in speaking to.

"We want to talk to Jen Psaki," McCaul answered. "The messages she was sending out from the White House were so different from what was happening on the ground."

McCaul also answered he'd like to have Kirby testify on comments of his that "no weapons were left behind."

"Which is insane," the chairman said. "Seven billion of weapons — and I can show you the tapes of the weapons and the cash — they were left behind."

During the interview, McCaul said he "threatened to hold the Secretary of State in contempt" and mentioned former senior adviser to Antony Blinken, Ned Price, as a possible target for testimony.

McCaul said he has sent letters to have those previously mentioned testify — "all giving a rosy picture while at the same time what was happening on the ground was very different."
