Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton criticized recent calls for a ceasefire while at a panel on Thursday, saying that people asking for it "do not understand Hamas."

While in conversation at a Baker Institute event, Clinton said a ceasefire would be a "gift to Hamas."

“People who are calling for a ceasefire now do not understand Hamas, that is not possible," she said. "It would be such a gift to Hamas because they would spend whatever time there was a ceasefire in effect rebuilding their armaments, creating stronger positions to be able to fend off an eventual assault by the Israelis.”

A ceasefire resolution was recently introduced by a group of Democratic lawmakers earlier in October, calling for an immediate de-escalation. Reps. Cori Bush, D-Mo., Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., André Carson, D-Ind., Summer Lee, D-Pa., and Delia Ramirez, D-Ill., are leading the effort to support the resolution.

The United Nations General Assembly also voted overwhelmingly last week in support of a "humanitarian truce" in the war between Israel and Hamas.
