Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, R, on Friday vetoed a bill that would have have banned minors from receiving transgender-affirming care and prevent transgender athletes from participating in gendered sports that do not align with their sex assigned at birth.

"Were I to sign House Bill 68 or were House Bill 68 to become law, Ohio would be saying that the state, that the government, knows better, what is medically best for a child than the two people who love that child the most: the parents," said DeWine at a press conference.

The bill passed both the Ohio Senate and Ohio House of Representatives by a wide margin, with a vote of 24-8 and 61-27, respectively. The legislature may be able to override DeWine's veto if three-fifths of the legislature votes to do so.

Ohio was the latest state to attempt to pass a law addressing treatment for transgender children and transgender participation in sports. Texas, Louisiana, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Missouri and others have also done so this year.
