Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., hit back at former Speaker Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., after the former speaker said the Republican conference won't "heal" without "consequences" for the Florida Republican and seven others who voted to oust him from the speakership.

"Honestly, I hadn't thought about him in a while, but it seems like I'm on his mind," Gaetz said.

The Florida lawmaker dismissed McCarthy's suggestions that he would be ousted from the Republican conference for being the one to bring the motion to vacate the speakership against the California Republican.

"The notion that the Republican conference is going to kick me out for doing something that was exceedingly popular seems unlikely," Gaetz said.

"But if what Kevin McCarthy wants is to make a motion to throw me out of the Republican conference, I guess all I can really say is 'bring the effing motion,' " Gatez added, taking a shot at the former speaker who had said the same when Gaetz threatened him with a motion to vacate.

Gaetz's comments came after McCarthy took aim at Gaetz and the other seven Republicans who voted to oust him in an interview with CNN.

“People have to earn the right to be here," McCarthy said. "I mean he’ll admit to you personally. He doesn’t have a conservative bent in his philosophy."
