Democrats Push Wisconsin Supreme Court To Overturn GOP-Drawn Legislative Maps
Conservative justices questioned the timing the challenge while liberal justices focused on the constitutionality of the current maps and what the process should be for adopting new ones
Democrats in Wisconsin on Tuesday urged the state’s Supreme Court to overturn Republican-drawn congressional legislative maps.
Conservative justices questioned the timing the challenge while liberal justices focused on the constitutionality of the current maps and what the process should be for adopting new ones.
Conservative Justice Rebecca Bradley aggressively questioned the motives of Democrats, repeatedly referencing a remark from newly elected liberal Justice Janet Protasiewicz’s campaign when she called the current maps “rigged.”
“Everybody knows that the reason we’re here is because there was a change in the membership of the court,” Bradley said.
Attorney Mark Gaber, from the Campaign Legal Center, argued the election result had nothing to do with the lawsuit’s timing, saying the challenge would have been filed regarding of the makeup of the court.
“I don’t see that as a partisan issue,” Gaber said.
The court was expected to issue its ruling no later than early 2024, with the state elections commission saying the maps must be in place by March 15 if the new districts will be in used in the upcoming elections.
