A former mayoral candidate in Connecticut pleaded guilty Friday to entering and remaining on restricted grounds during the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection.

Gino DiGiovanni Jr. — who ran for mayor in Derby last year — had already reached a plea deal in December — which is now official, reported by NBC News.

According to DiGiovanni's statement of offense, "the defendant admits that he knowingly entered and remained in a restricted building, that is, the U.S. Capitol Building, without lawful authority to do so."

His attorney Martin Minnella has said he expects DiGiovanni to get a fine and probation, which is usual for Jan. 6 defendants charged with misdemeanors who plead guilty.

The former mayoral candidate will be sentenced in April.

"I was there, I went inside there, and, you know, I didn’t damage or break anything," DiGiovanni told NBC Connecticut in October 2022.
