CNN’s Jake Tapper to Karine Jean-Pierre on Biden’s Age: He’s ‘Been in Politics Literally Since Before You Were Born’
The press secretary was born two years after Biden was elected to the Senate in 1974
CNN anchor Jake Tapper, during an interview with White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Tuesday pressed her about President Joe Biden's age after citing a poll that stated most American's are concerned about Biden running a reelection campaign at 80 years old.
"Seventy-seven percent of adults are worried," Tapper told Jean-Pierre during the Tuesday edition of The Lead.
"What did you make of it the other day when former ambassador and Governor Nikki Haley said that President Biden is — I’m paraphrasing here but — something along the lines of degrading before our eyes, and that ultimately, Vice President Kamala Harris will be president in a second term?" Tapper asked referring to comments by Haley who is running for the Republican presidential nomination.
Jean-Pierre invoked the Hatch Act, which restricts government officials from engaging in political activity, and then switched to speaking on some of Biden's presidential achievements.
"This is a president who knows how to get thew work done, who is focused on the American people, that's what I will speak to. I'll speak to his record and his record stands alone," Jean-Pierre said.
She said that Biden's record is something that American should be "proud of."
"But I’m talking about his age and his stamina and his ability to do the job," Tapper responded. "And you’re talking about the record, and I understand why you’d rather talk about the record. But I’m talking about what Americans see when they turn on the TV and they see, you know, Joe Biden’s been in politics literally since before you were born. And like, he’s aged as we all do."

The press secretary was born two years after Biden was elected to the Senate in 1974. Jean-Pierre countered by talking about the president's recent trip to Ukraine and said people were "impressed" by Biden going to a "war-zone country" and look "strong" there.
"I’m not saying he’s not able to walk," Tapper said.
"No, but you’re talking about his strength, right?" Jean-Pierre questioned. "You’re talking about how he’s looking now."
"He’s 80," Tapper interjected. "I think the average age of the American male only lives to be 77 or something."
Jean-Pierre told Tapper that she has had conversations with member of the White House Press Corps that have said it is "hard for them to keep up" with President Biden when they travel abroad because he is "constantly working every day" to deliver for the American people.
