Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., on Monday welcomed the newly appointed Laphonza Butler to the upper chamber after she was appointed by California Gov. Gavin Newsom.

"I’m confident that her breadth of work, acumen, and public service will meet this moment and be a great help to Senate Democrats as we continue to deliver for the American People," Schumer said in a statement. "I look forward to Senator-designate Butler’s swearing-in this week.”

Butler will now leave her role as the head of EMILY's List, a top Democratic organization aimed at electing pro-choice women to office. She was tapped to take office following the death of Sen. Dianne Feinstein last week.

In a statement, Butler said she was "humbled by the Governor’s trust.”
