Capitol Police Tuesday tasered and apprehended someone on the Senate side of the Capitol after they said they received a call that a man had an AR-15.

Officers rushed out of the Senate side of the Capitol and chased after the unidentified person before tasering and apprehending the person in the Upper Senate Park.

During the chase, Capitol Police blocked people from leaving through the Senate carriage door.

Police now say there is no longer a threat as the person is now in custody.

A Capitol Police officer told The Messenger the suspect was never at the U.S. Capitol.

"Everything happened — where he was observed, where he was arrested — at the park."

Just moments after the incident was resolved, members and staff received an alert that Capitol Police are also responding to a suspicious package in the Upper Senate Park.

In a post on X, the police department announced three road closures in effect until further notice — Columbus Circle between Louisiana and Delaware Avenues NE — D Street between Louisiana, and Delaware Avenues  NE.
