California Lieutenant Governor Asks Secretary of State to Remove Trump From Ballot
Kounalakis said the Colorado Supreme Court decision prompted her letter, asking the California Secretary of State to 'explore every legal option' to remove Trump
California Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis made a move to remove Donald Trump's from the state's presidential ballot on Wednesday, asking California Secretary of State Shirley Weber to explore "every legal option" at hand.
Kounalakis's letter came hours after the Colorado Supreme Court ruled to remove the former president from their ballot. The California official said it was a decision "about honoring the rule of law in our country and protecting the fundamental pillars of our democracy."
She reiterated that "Trump's insurrection disqualifies him under section three of the Fourteenth Amendment to stand for presidential re-election," accusing him of inciting said insurrection in the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
The decision to keep Trump out of the ballot in California would have to happen soon, given that the final list of candidates for the primary election will be announced next week, on Dec. 28.
"There will be inevitable political punditry about a decision to remove Trump from the ballot, but this is not a matter of political gamesmanship," Kounalakis wrote. "This is a dire matter that puts at stake the sanctity of our constitution and our democracy."
