Border Apprehensions Hits Yearly High With 200,000 in September

The number of Border Patrol apprehensions hit the highest it's been this year in September — 200,000 migrants were apprehended trying to cross the Southern border illegally, a Homeland Security official told CNN.

The number had already spiked in August, when Border Patrol reported arresting around 181,000 people on the U.S.-Mexico border trying to cross. The last time apprehensions reached such a high rate was in December of 2022, when 222,000 immigrants were arrested.

With the number of apprehensions and border crossings on the rise, New York City mayor Eric Adams announced on Monday he would be visiting the border and the Darien Gap later this week, to learn more about asylum seekers and their conditions.

President Joe Biden signed a new refugee cap last week for the year of 2024, and reallocated the numbers to allow more immigrants seeking asylum coming from the Caribbean and Latin America.
