Biden, Speaker Johnson Discuss Border in Phone Call Amid Record Migrant Numbers

President Joe Biden and Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., had a phone call to discuss the border Wednesday, a White House official confirmed to The Messenger.

The White House official could not provide further details about the call, but a spokesman for Johnson said in a statement that Johnson "strongly encouraged the President to use his executive authority to secure the southern border and reiterated the contents of his letter to the President dated December 21, 2023."

At a press conference earlier Wednesday, Johnson said House Republicans had put together a report on how Biden has “intentionally undermined border security with executive orders, agency decisions and the rest.”

“You’re going to see the House Republicans continue to insist upon real transformational policy changes at the border,” Johnson said.

The border has been a topline issue during the Biden administration, as border crossings have reached a record high and migrants have overwhelmed the welfare infrastructure of major cities such as New York and Chicago after Texas began busing tens of thousands of migrants into them. Texas' attempts to make border control and immigration a state issue have also caused conflict with the White House.
