Biden Signs Short Term Spending Bill, Averting Government Shutdown
The resolution, comprised of two funding bills, passed through Congress thanks to bipartisan votes in the House and Senate but received sharp opposition from conservative hardliners
President Joe Biden signed a continuing resolution to fund the government for a few more months Thursday night, averting a government shutdown one day before the deadline.
The resolution, comprised of two funding bills, passed through Congress thanks to a bipartisan 336-95 vote in the House, in which 127 members of the Republican majority voted in favor of the pair of bills. The Senate saw a vote along similar lines, with 87 senators voting for the bills and 11 against.
The bills fund the government in two parts, and one will expire Jan. 19, 2024 while the other will expire Feb. 2, 2024.
The two-step resolution has been controversial among Republicans, due to its lack of spending cuts or any riders to advance conservative policies. The House Freedom Caucus announced its opposition to the plan and called for "bold change" from Speaker Mike Johnson, R-L.A.
