President Joe Biden announced Jacob L. Lew on Tuesday as his nominee to act as the ambassador to Israel.

Lew, a Democrat, served as treasury secretary from 2013 to 2017 and White House chief of staff from 2012 to 2013 under Barack Obama. He served as the director of the Office of Management and Budget under Obama and Bill Clinton.

Tom Nides stepped down from the role Lew would take over back in July.

If confirmed, Lew would take his ambassador position during a shaky time in the relationship between the United States as Israel. Biden's administration has opposed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announcement that will overhaul the country's judicial system.
