Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., warned in an interview Saturday that if former President Donald Trump wins the 2024 presidential race, "it will be the end of democracy, functional democracy."

He's a "bitter man, having gone through four indictments, humiliated; he’s going to take it out on his enemies," Sanders told the Guardian about Trump.

Sanders ran to be the Democratic Party's presidential nominee in 2016 and 2020, and came in second both times. A staunch proponent of progressive policies, Sanders has been a prominent critic of Trump.

He has encouraged President Joe Biden to run for re-election on a "progressive agenda" to defeat Trump's "reactionary agenda."

He warned of a potential list of mounting calamities: “We’re looking at a series of extraordinary crises. Climate: it’s up in the air whether the world community will make the cuts in carbon emissions to provide a habitable planet for our grandchildren. The growth of oligarchy: a small number of extremely wealthy people control the economic and political life of billions. Democracy: under severe threat from those capitalizing on people’s fears.”

The "challenge we face is to be able to show people that government in a democratic society [that we] can address their very serious needs," said Sanders. "If we do that, we defeat Trump. If we do not, then we are the Weimar republic of the early 1930s."
