Battleground Dems Battle Biden on Iran, Border: Report
Manchin warned fellow Democrats to 'get serious' about border security
A trio of battleground Senate Democrats are considering breaking with President Joe Biden on both border security and signing onto Republican-endorsed legislation to freeze $6 billion in Iranian assets, according to reporting from Politico.
Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, and Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., told the news outlet they are thinking about joining Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., in signing on to Republican-backed legislation that would freeze the Iranian assets promised after a hostage swap — the West Virginia senator, for his part, warned Democrats that they need to "get serious" about border security.
“If Democrats don’t get serious about border security, they’re screwed," Manchin told Politico. "They’re screwing themselves.”
Manchin has yet to announce whether he plans to run for reelection amid rumors that he could be mulling a third-party presidential bid.
In Ohio and Montana, Brown and Tester face tough reelection prospects running in states that former President Donald Trump easily won twice. Republicans have keyed on the seats as top targets in hopes of winning back the majority.
Cook Political Report rates the Brown and Manchin seats as "toss ups" and rates Tester as "Lean Democrat."
