Days after filing for bankruptcy, Rudy Giuliani says he wishes he had taken his government pension when he left office as mayor of New York.

Giuliani told the New York Post that he elected not to sign up for his pension, which would amount to $26,000 annually after turning 62, because he was "giving back to the city I love — although I would like to take it now."

Mom-and-daughter Georgia election workers Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss sued Giuliani for defamation after he falsely claimed they had engaged in election fraud to steal the 2020 election from former President Donald Trump. They ended up being awarded $148 million in damages.

Shortly after losing his case, Giuliani filed for bankruptcy. His filing shows that Giuliani is between $100 million to $500 million in debt.

The New York Post's analysis found that if Giuliani had taken his pension, he would have collected around $440,000 in the last 17 years.
