Abortions in North Carolina have declined by 30% after a new law took effect in the state earlier this year, an analysis by the Guttmacher Institute found.

2,920 abortions were performed in July, compared to 4,230 the month before.

The data demonstrates the immediate impact of a new state law banning abortion after 12 weeks of pregnancy that took effect July 1.

The ban has been contentious — the state's legislature overrode the governor's veto in order to pass the bill, which has also been the subject of legal scrutiny.
