A 3,000-pound rhinoceros briefly got out of its "primary enclosure," prompting the Buffalo Zoo to institute emergency protocols and move visitors to secure locations, according to a report.

Mohan, a greater one-horned rhino, was seen in an adjacent paddock just before noon on Wednesday, and zoo staff worked to return him to the enclosure, WIVB reported.

About 10 minutes later, Mohan, who was born at the zoo in 2019, was returned to his exhibit.

A zoo spokesperson told WIVB that Mohan got into a back-of-house area and did not go more than a few feet from where he should have been.

Zoo officials said the rhinoceros did not pose a threat to the public at any time.

Still, the zoo had to activate emergency protocols, including closing zoo entry points and directing visitors to secure locations.

A full-grown greater rhinoceros can weigh between 4,000 and 6,000 pounds.

They are herbivores.
