WATCH: Elderly Alabama Woman Arrested After City Council Meeting Where She Criticized Officials
Mayor Wayman Newton denied having anything to do with the arrest of Novilee Williams, a vocal critic
An outspoken 79-year-old Alabama woman was arrested earlier this month after attending a city council meeting, where she touched the arm of a city employee during a heated exchanged all captured on film.
Novilee Williams, who AL.com described as something of a fixture at Tarrant City Council meetings, spoke out during the Dec. 4 meeting, criticizing officials for failing to keep the city's streets clean.
"Y'all need to get on the ball!" she said, before repeatedly calling Mayor Wayman Newton "corrupt."
From her seat in the audience, Williams accused Newton of harboring "a vendetta against the [police] chief," and asked why.
Video shows Shayla Myricks, a city accountant seated just in front of her, turning toward Williams.
It's unclear what Myricks says to her, but Williams says, "turn around, honey." She continues to speak, saying she believes "the man need to be charged with something," and calls for an investigation.
Myricks turns again to look at Williams, who repeats, "turn around."

Then the two continue to talk over each other. In the video, Myricks is seen starting to move her right arm toward Williams, and the elderly woman takes the accountant's arm, and slowly pushes it away.
"Don't put your hands on me," Myricks tells Williams, who continues to criticize the mayor. Newton had left the meeting halfway through and was not present at that time.
After the meeting is adjourned, someone can be heard off camera saying the word "assault" before a police officer is seen approaching Williams, and talking with her. He then walks away with what appears to be her license.
AL.com reported that the day after the meeting, an officer went to Williams' home to arrest her on disorderly conduct and harassment charges. She was taken to the town jail for arraignment.
Myricks pressed charges against Williams, alleging the septuagenarian "did engage in fighting and threatening behavior in a public place."
Newton spoke to AL.com, and denied having anything to do with the arrest.
"But you can't go putting your hands on people," he said. "I wasn't there, and she was arrested when she put her hands on the city accountant. It was the city accountant who wanted to press charges against her. I didn't even know that it had happened until people started calling me."
Tarrant councilwoman Veronica Bandy Freeman said she supports Williams, and feels the city "went overboard" with the arrest.
Newton, Myricks, and Williams couldn't be reached for comment on the matter.
Tarrant, which has a population around 6,000, is a city with some history of political bitterness. Last year, Tommy Bryant, a Tarrant councilman, punched Newton outside city hall. Bryant was arrested, but later acquitted at trial after the judge ruled the mayor had used "fighting words" while making sexually-explicit remarks about Bryant's wife.
