WATCH: Bear Nearly Takes Out Skiers on Icy Lake Tahoe Slope
Areas surrounding Lake Tahoe are home to thousands of wild black bears, but violent encounters with humans are extremely rare
Skiers on Ridge Run Trail at Heavenly Ski Resort in South Lake Tahoe, on the border of California and Nevada, recently captured a bear racing them in a now-viral video.
Originally uploaded to TikTok by Tao Feng, under the username @tao7570, the video features at least five skiers on the trail with a bear not far in front of them on the left-hand side.
“Almost hit a bear skiing down Ridgerun Heavenly,” Feng said in the video. “Didn’t realize it was a bear until it was too close."
Feng explained in the comments of the post why they didn't stop. “I was honestly afraid it would attack me if I stopped too close,” Feng said. “All I could think of was to get away fast I bet the bear thought so too, and we both underestimate the other’s speed.”
No one collided with the bear and no injuries were reported.
Speaking to KTLA about the Dec. 10 incident, Feng said he felt grateful for avoiding the bear but even better after seeing the bear reunited with what seems like his mother off the trail.

The reunion can briefly be seen at the 12-second mark of the video before trees block the view.
California and areas surrounding Lake Tahoe are home to about 30,000 and 40,000 wild black bears, but violent encounters with humans are extremely rare, KTLA reported.
"It’s prime bear habitat and we see bears at the ski resorts there quite often – usually because of the access to food and garbage that’s available sometimes," said Peter Tira, spokesperson for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
Tira noted that seeing a bear in the area is not surprising.
