A suspect in Virginia caused a massive explosion after the person fired a flare gun at police attempting to search the residence on Monday, a police spokesperson told The Messenger.

Arlington County police responded to a report of possible shots fired at around 4:45 p.m. Preliminary details indicated the suspect discharged a flare gun from his residence, causing the massive explosion.

Police were able to obtain a search warrant for the residence as they investigated. As officials tried to execute the warrant, the suspect fired several rounds from inside the home, according to the spokesperson.

Arlington County police told nearby residents to shelter in place just after 8:15 p.m., FOX 5 reported.

Several officers reported injuries in the blast. All were treated at the scene.

A man who witnessed the lead-up to the explosion told the station that police and the suspect were engaged in a tense standoff.

"They ended up driving the SWAT truck through the front door," he said.

He said the suspect began firing a weapon back.

"I believe it was like an [assault rifle]," he said. "It was a high-caliber weapon."

Arlington Fire and EMS announced the fire was under control at around 10:40 p.m. Crews remained at the scene to battle small spot fires.

Arlington County Police Department is investigating the circumstances of the explosion.
