A demonstration on Sunday highlighting the ongoing migrant crisis escalated into violence when protesters confronted one another directly outside New York City's mayor's mansion.

Videos from local news sources captured a chaotic scene, with police officers arresting demonstrators and participants physically clashing.

A total of five people were arrested, including former mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa according to local reports.

Pro-migrant rights activists squared off against a group of anti-migrant protesters.

"No migrants on Long Island!" one man shouted, as reported by The New York Post. "We pay a lot of property taxes."

Local footage highlighted one protester against asylum-seekers, proudly displaying a sign that read "Americans over migrants."

Counter-protesters retaliated, shouting, "F– white supremacist NYPD," as reported by the Post, while police officers moved in to manage the situation.

The station reported that some counter-protesters attempted to set American flags ablaze.

The city, according to officials, has welcomed 100,000 asylum seekers in just the past year, primarily due to busloads of migrants arriving from other states. This influx presents challenges for New York City officials as they work to allocate sufficient resources and manage infrastructure.

Both New York Mayor Eric Adams and Governor Kathy Hochul have publicly called on President Joe Biden to address the persistent migrant crisis.
