Footage shared on social media showed a shark attack a man swimming near a beach in Egypt on Thursday, resulting in the man's death.

According to Reuters, the man, a Russian citizen, was in the waters near the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Hurghada when the tiger shark attack occurred.

A witness shared a video of the gruesome attack on the messaging service Telegram.

The video showed multiple people urgently swimming to shore as the shark dragged the Russian man underwater.

"Oh my god! Oh my god!" one woman could be heard screaming during the attack.

Efforts were made to capture the shark, Reuters reported.

A diver who arrived at the scene after the attack said that bystanders could not save the man.

The outlet said that local authorities implemented a swimming ban on multiple nearby beaches after the incident.

The Guardian reported that the victim, born in 1999, lived in Egypt full-time and was not a tourist.

Reuters said that the Russian Consulate General in Hurghada issued a statement urging Russian tourists to exercise caution in the water and abide by any swimming restrictions imposed by local authorities.

The Florida Museum's International Shark Attack File said tiger sharks, along with white and bull sharks, are the main species involved in shark attacks on humans in the water.
