One of the most popular tourist towns on the Mediterranean is banning rolling suitcases after residents complained about the noise from tourists dragging them over the city’s cobblestone and brick streets.

Dubrovnik Mayor Mato Franković came up with the new rules according to Schengenvisainfo News.

Starting this summer, wheeled suitcases must be carried not rolled in the Croatian hotspot. Tourists who break the rules face a nearly $300 fine.

The government intends to set up a system by November that allows travelers to deposit bags outside the city and have them transported to the hotels where they are staying.

The measure comes as part of the “Respect the City” program, introduced by the Dubrovnik Tourist Office.

Other parts of the campaign include not walking around the city in “swimwear or inappropriately uncovered”, discarding cigarette butts in public places and not eating or drinking around cultural monuments.

They introduced fines for people who climb on city walls and fences.

Dubrovnik’s Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the rules are meant to preserve and respect it, officials say.

Its popularity with tourists soared after it was used as a setting in HBO's "Game of Thrones."
