The United States has reached a new record high for mass shootings midway through a year, with 332 shootings through June 28, according to data from the Gun Violence Archive.

Mass shootings — in which at least four people are shot, not including the shooter — have more than doubled in the U.S. over the last five years, with 151 mass shootings recorded at the midway point in 2018.

That figure rose to 190 in 2019, 240 in 2020 and 309 in 2021, with a slight decline to 293 in 2022.

Mass shootings in a single year reached a record high in 2021 at 690, and remained elevated in 2022 at 646.

In 2023, some 21,000 people have died so far due to gun violence of all types, including murder, suicide and unintentional shootings. In addition, roughly 18,000 have been injured in shootings this year.

The Gun Violence Archive tallies gun violence data from some 7,500 law enforcement, media, government and commercial sources each day.
