Authorities at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas confirmed there was an active shooter on Wednesday in a social media post on X and that police were responding to the scene.

Three people were said to be injured in the shooting, but the extent of their injuries was not immediately clear, per authorities.

Less than an hour after the initial reports of shots fired, the suspect was located and dead, according to local news outlet KSNV. It was not immediately clear how the person died.

Campus police urged people to continue avoiding the area during the active investigation.

UNLV initially told students to evacuate to a safe area after shots were fired in an on-campus building.

Videos from the scene showed a massive police presence sweeping the area, during the last week of classes at the southwestern university.

"We are responding to preliminary reports of an #ActiveShooter on the campus of UNLV near BEAM Hall," police said on X. "There appears to be multiple victims at this time. Please avoid the area and we will have more information soon."

In a subsequent update, the university also announced that shots were fired inside the student union. The sheriff also said a motive, for the moment, is not clear.

A student identified only as Jessica told KVVU that she was in the student union with friends when the report of shots fired came in, and they sheltered in place. The friends said they passed a shot-out window once they were able to evacuate.

Beam Hall houses UNLV's Lee Business School, according to the university's website. The building contains facilities including kitchens, computer labs and classrooms.

The White House announced that they were monitoring the situation during a Wednesday afternoon press briefing.

A ground stop was ordered at the Harry Reid Airport due to security concerns, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The university is located just one mile away from the airport, according to Google Maps.

The university is less than three miles away from the Mandalay Bay luxury resort where 60 people were killed in 2017, during one of the largest mass shootings in American history.
