A Russian shelling attack has killed at least three civilians and wounded 17 in Ukraine's south and east where fierce battles are being waged as Ukrainian fighters are trying to repel Vladimir Putin's military forces.

Three people were killed and another 10 wounded in the front-line Donetsk region, Gov. Pavlo Kyrylenko said on Saturday, the Associated Press reported.

Fighting continued in three areas of Donetsk as Russian troops have amassed and are trying to advance, the Ukrainian General Staff reported, noting that three cities - Bakhmut, Lyman and Marinka — are considered front-line hot spots.

In the eastern region of Kharkiv, a 57-year-old man was wounded in Russian shelling, said Gov. Oleh Syniehubov.

A teenage boy was injured in the Sumy region, farther west, in a strike from across the Russian border.
