Georgia Toddler, 4, Starved to Death Living In A House of Horrors. It Took Months to Get Cops to Check on Her
'Nobody really pushed the issue, and as a result, this child died,' one expert said
Georgia law enforcement is investigating why the police repeatedly failed to check on the home of a now-murdered toddler and her allegedly abused siblings, even after receiving multiple calls from the Division of Family and Child Services.
Four-year-old Treasure McWeay died of starvation in her father’s Atlanta home in mid-December. At the time of her death, she weighed just 24 pounds – the expected weight for a two-year-old – and was reportedly unable to sit up. Treasure’s father, Rodney McWeay, allegedly kidnapped her and two of her brothers from their mother. McWeay also allegedly beat the children’s mother and older half-sibling before they were able to escape from the house.
"It appears to me that a bunch of different systems here failed," former Georgia DFCS director Tom Rawlings told WAGA. "This is one of the more troubling situations I’ve reviewed."
Police reportedly arrived at the McWeay home but never actually entered the residence – even after detailed complaints of the children living in squalor.
"Officers were dispatched to the home, but it does not appear officers had contact with Mr. McWeay or the children during these calls," the Atlanta police told WAGA.
"In an effort to ensure these calls were handled properly, the Atlanta Police Department’s Office of Professional Standards has initiated an investigation into these calls."
In at least one instance, 11 days after McWeay allegedly kidnapped the children from their mother, the police did not visit the house at all, even though DFCS asked for a wellness check.

"When we received the report alleging that the father fled Maryland with the children, we alerted law enforcement so they could attempt another welfare check but were told the reporter would have to make the request themself because there was no evidence the children were in Georgia," DFCS told WAGA.
For months, DFCS reportedly continued to try to get access to the children but were repeatedly thwarted.
"Nobody really pushed the issue, and as a result, this child died," Rawlings said of the division's response.
McWeay is charged with 14 felonies including murder, kidnapping and child cruelty.
