Nearly 100,000 Azerbaijan refugees have flooded into Armenia while Azerbaijan attempts to reclaim Nagorno-Karabakh.

Thousands more have withstood major delays as they attempt to enter the country.

Several refugees are suffering from poor health and medical emergencies, Filippo Grandi, head of the U.N. refugee agency UNHCR wrote on X formerly known as Twitter.

"Many are hungry, exhausted and need immediate assistance,” Gradni wrote.  "International help is very urgently required."

Freelance journalist Siranush Sargsyan who has been reporting on the mass exodus told Reuters that he’s witnessed thousands of refugees fleeing their home country with minimal belongings stuffed into vehicles like tractors.

They’ve become trapped on highways leading to Armenia, he said.

"This exodus is already unbearable physically because we have already spent 16 hours on this road... It seems in the next 24 hours we still won’t be able to reach the border,” Sargsyan told the news outlet.

Nagorno-Karabakh is currently internationally known as part of Azerbaijan but the region is prominently populated by Armenian Christians.

"The world should not believe that we are willingly leaving Artsakh, ever," one refugee told Reuters. "We fought till the very end, with our blood, with our lives to protect our country."
