Tennessee Toddler Dies Days After Being Hit by Stray Bullet During New Year’s Eve ‘Celebratory Gunfire’
The gunman has not been found, and police said the investigation is ongoing
A New Year's Eve celebration ended in heartbreak for the Tennessee family of a 3-year-old who was struck and killed by a stray bullet from "celebratory gunfire" while inside an apartment, according to local reports.
Brayden Smith was with his parents inside their Memphis apartment on New Year's Eve when a bullet came piercing through a window of the home, WMC reported.
Police arrived at the scene at around 6 p.m. on Sunday, and Smith was rushed to the children's hospital. On Wednesday, police confirmed the young boy died from his injuries.
Memphis Police Chief Don Crowe told the outlet the bullet appeared to have been randomly fired from a separate area of the apartment complex.
“We’ve tried to stress that this month-celebratory gunfire is illegal and celebratory gunfire leads to tragic events like this, and we just have to stop shooting these guns,” Crowe said.
The gunman has not been found, and police said the investigation is ongoing.
A GoFundMe has been created on behalf of the boy's family to cover funeral expenses.
