A 17-year-old marching band member who collapsed during a high school football game in El Paso, Texas has been pronounced dead.

During a match between Bowie High School and Ysleta at Baty Simmang Memorial Stadium on Friday, September 8, Bowie marching band member Daniel Esparza collapsed and lost consciousness.

Medical personnel administered CPR to Esparza before he was transported to the University Medical Center.

On Sunday, UMC officials confirmed Esparza's passing. The game was subsequently canceled due to the medical emergency.

A GoFundMe page established to assist Esparza's family reveals that the teen was "the only drum major of the band" and "a member of ROTC."

"The El Paso ISD community grieves with the family of Bowie High School student Daniel Esparza who tragically passed away Sunday, Sept. 10," stated the El Paso Independent School District, as reported by KFOX14. "Daniel was a beloved member of the school community."

The district has made a "team of counselors" available to support students and staff at Bowie High.
