A man was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries on Friday after allegedly fleeing a hit-and-run and then accidentally shooting himself, according to police officials.

Police responded to reports of a shooting at 16th Avenue and Geary Street where they found an adult male with an apparent gunshot wound. The man was later determined to be a suspect in an earlier hit-and-run.

A San Francisco Police Department spokesperson told The Messenger that officers responded to a report of a hit-and-run vehicle collision near 14th Avenue and Clement Street around noon on Friday. They said they found one person with non-life-threatening injuries at the scene, who was then hospitalized.

A witness whose car was reportedly also hit by the suspect's, told NBC Bay Area that a BMW t-boned one car and then bounced off it before sideswiping their car and then driving away.

"Based off of what witnesses were saying in the area, they were wearing ski masks and I think there were three people in the car," Irene R., another victim, told the NBC affiliate.

The SFPD said that they located the suspect's vehicle near 15th Avenue and Geary Street, where witnesses reportedly saw three people exit the car and run.

Officers and medics provided first aid when they arrived at the scene of the gunshot wound before the suspect was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

As of Saturday, police have preliminarily determined the gunshot wound to be self-inflicted and an accident.
