Surfer Jailed for Drunken Nude Rampage Through Indonesia to be Deported Back to Australia
Australian man pays 'restorative justice' fees after his bender left a man seriously injured
An Australian surfer who was jailed for a drunken, naked rampage in Indonesia’s deeply conservative Muslim province of Aceh has been released from jail and will be deported back to his country.
Bodhi Mani Risby-Jones, 23, agreed to apologize and pay compensation in the case, officials said on Wednesday.
He says he is “relieved” and plans to “give my family a big hug” when he returns home, according to 9 News.
He was arrested in April at a surf resort after police accused him of going on the rampage that left a fisherman with serious injuries.
Risby-Jones will give money to the fisherman’s family as part of an agreement that avoided an assault charge that could have sent him to prison for five years.
The amount of the compensation was not released but Australian media said Risby-Jones paid about 250 million rupiah ($16,810) to the family and hospital fees for the injured fisherman.

The unidentified man underwent surgery for broken bones and a serious infection in his legs.
“It’s been a long time coming and I’m feeling amazing and super happy and grateful,” Risby-Jones said. "Everyone has been very nice and accommodated me well, thank you.”
Violent acts by foreigners are very rare in Aceh, the only province in Muslim-majority Indonesia that practices Sharia law, a concession made by the central government in 2001 as part of efforts to end a decades-long war for independence.
Risby-Jones is the first foreigner to successfully resolve a case through restorative justice in the province.
He said he plans to visit Indonesia again in the future.
"I do plan to come back here, I think the people are very nice and the surf's really good," Risby-Jones said.
