The son of Philadelphia Flyers general manager Daniel Briere was sentenced to 15 months of probation for pushing a wheelchair down a flight of stairs while its owner was using the restroom.

Carson Briere, who attends Mercyhurst University in Eerie, Pennsylvania, was caught on surveillance footage sitting on and playing with the wheelchair before eventually shoving it from the top of the stairs, Philadelphia station WPVI-TV reported.

The wheelchair reportedly belonged to Sydney Benes, who lost her legs in a 2021 car accident, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. The wheelchair was left unoccupied as Benes' friends carried her down the stairs so that she could use the bathroom.

She said she felt humiliated after finding the wheelchair damaged at the bottom of the stairs.

Carson, 24, was dropped from the men's ice hockey team at his university following the Mar. 11 incident.

"There is no excuse for my actions, and I will do whatever I can to make up for this serious lack of judgment," he wrote in a statement earlier this year.

Daniel Briere said his son's actions were "inexcusable and run completely counter to our family's values of treating people with respect."

"Carson is very sorry and accepts full responsibility for his behavior," he added.

Carson had previously been kicked off of Arizona State's hockey club in 2019 for violating the team's rules, WPVI reported earlier this year.

Carson was charged with mischief alongside 22-year-old Patrick Carrozzi. Both have a chance to have their charges dismissed under an Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition program for first-time offenders, local paper GoEerie reported.
