A man was arrested early Wednesday morning for allegedly attacking and sexually assaulting a University of Wisconsin student on Sunday.

Brandon A. Thompson, 26, was arrested on first-degree sexual assault, first-degree reckless injury and strangulation charges, Madison Police said Wednesday.

The unidentified victim is in her 20s and was critically injured in the attack. Police said she is expected to survive. There is no known connection between the student and Thompson.

Records show Thompson is currently in the custody of the Dane County Sheriff’s Department. He has yet to be arraigned.

Police had said in a Tuesday update that “we are making significant progress on this case.” They also reiterated their call for businesses and residents in the 500 block of W. Wilson St., where the attack occurred, to provide any surveillance footage they might have.

In the wake of the attack, Madison Police recommended students walk in groups with their phones down and earbuds out, especially at night.
