Scorching Temperatures in Texas Putting Wildlife at Risk as Animals Struggle to Find Water: Report
The Houston SPCA said it is treating more animals for dehydration during heatwave
Searing temperatures in Texas are taking a toll on the Lone Star State's wildlife, with many animals scrambling to find water to drink, according to reports.
The Houston SPCA said it is treating more animals for dehydration and noted a 20% increase in the number of sick, injured, or orphaned animals it is seeing this year compared to last, KHOU reported.
The animals - including a baby woodpecker, mockingbird and yellow-crowned night heron - are being treated for dehydration and will be released into the wild after they recover.
Temps in Houston have been in the high 90s for the past week and are expected to hit the 100-degree mark beginning Tuesday.
The SPCA has a number of recommendations to care for wildlife in the scorching heat:
* Remove dirt and debris from birdbaths and refill with fresh water at least once a day.
* Leave out extra suet or birdseed in the yard.

* Check under trees for any wildlife that may have fallen.
* A baby bird that doesn't appear injured can potentially be reunited with its parents by placing it back in the nest.
* If the nest can't be found, place the bird in a box with soft rags and take it to the Houston SPCA.
* Don't try to feed or give water to distressed animals because they may have other injuries.
