A man allegedly led police on a chase through San Francisco and into the eastern portion of the Bay Area on Sunday night and threw at least one potentially explosive device at the pursuing officers, according to a media report and the local police officers' union.

Police responded to reports of an alleged assault at the Saints Peter and Paul Church in the city’s North Beach neighborhood, according to a report by the San Francisco Standard.

The suspect then fled the church in a vehicle, allegedly setting off some sort of homemade explosive device during the officers’ pursuit of the man, according to the San Francisco Police Officers Association. KRON 4 reported the suspect threw other unknown items out of the vehicle at pursuing officers.

He then drove east toward Oakland, ending up roughly 35 miles away in the city of Martinez, where police and the California Highway Patrol arrested him.

According to the Standard, no one was seriously hurt during the chase.

The union representing the San Francisco Police Department urged residents in the area who may have information about the alleged assault and pursuit to contact the police at (415) 575-4444. An investigation into the chase is ongoing. The union also shared a picture of the alleged explosive.
