A dramatic video released by the sheriff’s office shows an officer running down a Florida beach as crews tried to rescue ex-NFL quarterback Ryan Mallett from the ocean.

“I think they got him on the board now,” another officer told him as he reached the scene.

Dozens of onlookers watched the scene unfold.

Authorities say rip currents were not a factor in the apparent drowning death.

The Destin Fire Control District said there was a yellow flag condition at the time Mallett was in the water, meaning there is a medium hazard of moderate surf and/or currents.

“The tragic loss of life, it’s always difficult when we lose a tourist or resident here, but we have no indication here of any dangerous conditions out there,” Sheriff Eric Aden said in a video posted to Facebook.

Destin Beach Safety got a call just before 2:15 p.m. on Tuesday for a swimmer in distress.

Six swimmers were struggling to get back to shore.  When rescuers got there they learned that one person had gone underwater and failed to resurface.

Two lifeguards went to rescue Mallett, 35, who was the missing swimmer.

They brought him to shore and immediately started life-saving measures but it was too late.

He eventually played for the Houston Texans and Baltimore Ravens. He was a high school football head coach in Arkansas when he passed away.

"The NFL family is deeply saddened by the passing of Ryan Mallett. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones," the NFL said via a tweet.
