A Russian official confirmed Monday that a seventh general had been killed in the conflict with Ukraine, following nearly a week of speculation that he was blown up on a mine.

The governor of the Voronezh region, Alexander Gusev, said Maj Gen Vladimir Zavadsky, 45, died in the line of duty, but did not give any further details.

It had been reported Wednesday that Zavadsky had died in a mine explosion, although it was not clear where this happened.

Gusev described the general's death as a "heavy loss" and a "piercing pain" in a post on Telegram.

"Wherever the motherland sent him, he gave an example of dedication to duty, to which his many awards bear witness," he said.

The BBC reported that Zavadsky's unit was likely in the Kherson region when the explosion happened last week.

Zavadsky is reportedly the seventh Major General to be killed in the conflict with Ukraine, which is soon to reach the two-year mark, and the 12th senior officer overall to be reported dead.

The Russian Defense Ministry has not officially commented on the loss, but this is common, even when others have spoken publicly.

Russia has continued to surround Ukrainian towns and target its military infrastructure, as Ukraine said it was changing tactics to bolster defenses ahead of the winter months.

In the United States, the White House has warned funding for its support of Ukraine could run out without action from Congress by the end of the year.
