A record-breaking $476 million Mega Millions jackpot has been claimed by Johnnie Taylor, a 71-year-old man from Queens, New York. Announced as the winner on Monday, Taylor cashed in his ticket from the April 14 drawing, netting a lump sum payment of $157 million after taxes, stated New York Lottery officials.

This payment, surpassing the state's previous record prize by $39 million, is the largest game prize ever won in New York since the lottery's inception in 2002, reports CBS News.

Upon revealing his win, the recently retired handyman exclaimed, “it still doesn't feel real.” Officials shared that Taylor plans to use his newfound wealth to travel, purchase a new home, acquire a new hybrid vehicle, and make a generous donation to his local church.

The convenience store that sold the winning ticket, Liberty Beer and Convenience, will receive a $10,000 bonus from the state lottery, officials announced. It was also noted that Taylor routinely purchases his Mega Millions and Powerball quick pick tickets from this establishment.

"The New York Lottery congratulates Mr. Taylor on winning this historic jackpot," said Brian O'Dwyer, Chairman of the New York State Gaming Commission, "the sales of which brought millions of dollars to New York's public schools and lottery retailers across the state."

As per the official announcement, the New York Lottery remains North America’s largest and most profitable lottery. A significant portion of ticket sales contributes to the state's education budget, with the lottery raising an impressive $3.6 billion in the 2021-2022 fiscal year.
