Ray Lewis III, the son of NFL legend Ray Lewis, died Wednesday of an accidental overdose, officials have revealed.

A blue pill, "unofficially" identified as Alprazolam, was found nearby, per the outlet. Alprazolam is sold under the brand name Xanax. Police reportedly attempted to use Narcan to revive him, but were not successful.

The Messenger has reached out to Casselberry police for further comment, but did not immediately hear back.

Lewis III played football for three seasons at Lake Mary Prep in Florida while in high school, and rushed for 5,283 yards and 53 touchdowns, per Max Prep.

As a college freshman, he played for the University of Miami, and on the same field where his father was once crowned All-American ahead of his draft by the Baltimore Ravens in 1996, according to the Baltimore Sun.

He then served and became a cornerback for Coastal Carolina University in 2015, before transferring again to Virginia Union University.

"Ray was a tremendous young man who played with the spirit of a lion. He was a great asset to the Virginia Union family," Mark James, who was Lewis III's coach during his time at VUU, told The Sun. "He will always be a Panther. May God bless his family."

Lewis III told The Sun in 2010 he hoped to play in the NFL to make “a difference in people’s lives outside the football field.”
