Rachel Morin’s Family Appeals to California High Schools to Help Find Killer of Maryland Mom of 5
An investigation that began in August is increasingly focused on Los Angeles where a family lawyer believes the suspect may have recently attended school
Rachel Morin's family is increasing their efforts to find her killer by reaching out to high school communities in Los Angeles in the hopes that someone can identify a mysterious man seen in surveillance footage.
"We know the killer is between 20-30 years old," attorney Randolph Rice told The Messenger on Tuesday.
"That makes it possible he was in high school as recently as two years ago," he said.
Morin, a 37-year-old mother of five, was discovered dead after she went on an evening hike near her home in Maryland on Aug. 5.
When she didn't return home that night, her boyfriend reported Morin missing, and her body was found inside a tunnel near the hiking area the following morning.
While initially short on leads, investigators had a breakthrough when they found DNA evidence at the scene, which traced back to an unidentified man wanted for a home invasion and sexual assault of a juvenile female in Los Angeles earlier this year.

The suspect, described as a Hispanic male in his early to mid-20s, approximately 5-foot-9, and weighing 160 lbs, was captured on home surveillance footage during the L.A. incident.
However, there is no clear image of his face, and police have not yet been able to identify him.
Rice, who is representing Morin's family, says they recently sent personalized letters to principals of five high schools in Los Angeles near where the suspect was seen in the footage.
They hope someone will provide them with the lead that will eventually lead police to the unidentified man.
"We believe he is familiar with this area, and thus, he would have ties to the community, such as a former student in one of the local high schools," Rice told The Messenger.
"We hope a teacher, staff, or a current student in one of the five high schools around the Los Angeles crime scene will recognize him and provide his name," he added.
Per Fox affiliate WBFF, the schools include John C. Fremont High School, Dr. Maya Angelou Community Senior High, Augustus F. Hawkins High School, Mervyn M. Dymally High School, and South East High School.
Flyers in both English and Spanish that included information about the case were included with the letters.
Earlier this month, the family distributed 10,000 flyers around Los Angeles with information.
A reward for information leading to Rachel's killer is currently at $30,000.
Anyone with information on the case is urged to call (410) 836-7788. Tips can also be sent to rmtips@harfrodsheriff.org.
