Jewish Students Found Hiding in Secret Tunnel ‘Hole in Wall’ Under Brooklyn Synagogue Refused to Leave, Police Say
The students pled not guilty to obstruction at their arraignment Tuesday night
Five young rabbinical students have been charged with obstruction after allegedly refusing to get out from "inside a hole" in a wall of the synagogue they damaged in an illicit secret underground tunnel under the worship center, according to court documents.
Dov Bear Shenhav, 20; Shmuel Malka, 19; Blumenfeld Yerachmiel, 20; and Henachem Mulakando, 19, were all charged with obstruction for defying police orders to vacate the tunnel they created, according to court documents reviewed by the New York Post.
Levi Tyz Lahav, 20, was charged with obstruction for allegedly interfering when the police were trying to arrest the others, per the complaint.
Two of the young men, Mulakando and Yerachmiel, were also charged with criminal mischief for allegedly tearing apart a wall of the synagogue – using a crowbar and bare hands – in front of the police, according to the document.
The arrests stem from a clash between rogue rabbinical students and work crews who arrived on Monday to fill in the tunnel at the global headquarters of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement in Crown Heights.

The five students entered not-guilty pleas at their arraignments on Tuesday night and were released without bail, according to court records.
Rabbi Yehuda Krinsky, the chairman of the Chabad-Lubavitch, issued a statement on Tuesday saying it was “pained by the vandalism of a group of young agitators who damaged the synagogue below Chabad Headquarters.”
The tunnel was believed to have been created in the basement of an empty building near the headquarters and connecting to the synagogue basement.
