High School Quarterback Who Collapsed During Game With Brain Bleed Shows Signs of Life
Mason Martin's mom revealed that her son's chest tube has been removed and his lungs have completely recovered
A Pennsylvania high school quarterback who collapsed on the field during a Friday night game has begun making "purposeful" movement in his arms after spending several days listed in critical condition in the hospital.
Mason Martin was rushed to UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh after suffering a collapsed lung and bleeding in his brain during the third quarter of the game. The 17-year-old, who attends Karns City Area High School in western Pennsylvania, was reportedly tackled but managed to continue playing for a period of time, according to local station KDKA-TV.
He suddenly collapsed after jogging onto the field for a kickoff return.
Martin's mom revealed that her son's chest tube had been removed and his lungs had completely recovered. His legs have also reacted to pinches.
However, Martin's eyes have only slightly reacted to light, suggesting that he still faces a long road to recovery.
"This is the first positive step in an extremely long journey," Stacy King Martin, who is reportedly battling stage 4 breast cancer, wrote in a Facebook update. "The prayer vigils held at the hospital and at Karns City have overwhelmed us with joy and motivation."

Hundreds of people, including football players from across the region, attended a vigil for Martin on Sunday night to pray for his swift recovery.
"You don't hold vigils for minor inconveniences," Pastor Pete Sapp said during the event. "You hold vigils when you are in need of a miracle."
Eric Ritzert, the superintendent of the school district, vowed to offer ongoing support for students affected by the tragedy.
