The Russian military on Sunday said a nuclear-powered submarine successfully test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile off its coast.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said on Telegram that the Bulava missile is designed to carry nuclear warheads and was fired from the Imperator Alexander III strategic missile cruiser from the northern White Sea.

"Firing a ballistic missile is the final element of state tests, after which a decision will be made to accept the cruiser into the Navy," the Defense Ministry said in its Telegram statement.

The missile hit a target in the Kamchatka, a peninsula in far eastern Russia.

The Telegram statement did not specify when the missile launch happened.

The Associated Press reported that the Imperator Alexander III has the capacity to carry 16 Bulava missiles.

Russia last month announced that the Kremlin had successfully tested its ability to fire a retaliatory nuclear strike by land, sea, and air, as The Messenger previously reported.
