Police Officer Convicted in George Floyd Killing, Derek Chauvin, Stabbed in Prison
Tucson's Federal Correctional Institution has been troubled by security and staffing issues
Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who was convicted of the killing of May 2020 George Floyd, has reportedly been stabbed by another inmate in an Arizona prison.
Chauvin was reportedly stabbed and seriously injured Friday at the Federal Correctional Institution, Tucson, according to the Associated Press.
An unauthorized source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the AP about an attack at Tucson’s Federal Correctional Institution, a medium-security facility troubled by security breaches and understaffing.
The report states that the Bureau of Prisons said that one of its prisoners in Tucson was assaulted around 12:30 p.m. local time on Friday. The bureau said its employees contained the incident and took “life-saving measures before the inmate, who it did not name, was taken to a hospital for further treatment and evaluation.”
The Bureau of Prisons said no other inmates or prison employees were injured and that all visitations for the 380 inmates have been put on hold until further notice.
Chauvin, 47, was one of four Minneapolis police officers seen in the custody death of George Floyd in 2020. He was originally in solidarity confinement for fear of his “own protection.”

Chauvin was convicted of killing African-American George Floyd by pressing his knee into his neck. Chauvin insisted his trial was a "sham" during his first interview from prison.
He was interviewed for a crowdfunded documentary, "The Fall of Minneapolis,"which was produced by journalist Liz Collin and released Monday by right-wing advocacy group Alpha News.
Floyd’s death on May 25, 2020, ignited a series of nationwide protests against police brutality and led to a national movement against “systemic racism.”
