As the Israel-Hamas conflict continues to claim the lives of thousands of people on both sides, civilians are arming themselves as they go on supply runs on the sixth day of war.

In the southern Israel city of Sderot, a female shopper in shorts and a T-shirt was photographed with an M16 assault rifle strapped to her body as she exited a store and climbed into her car in Thursday, days after Israeli officials announced they were working toward arming civilian security teams.

National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir said on Tuesday that the ministry was in the process of purchasing 10,000 assault rifles for civilian security in areas near the Israeli border, Jewish-Arab cities, and West Bank settlements, in addition to the 4,000 assault rifles that were already being distributed, according to the Times of Israel.

Gvir said hundreds of towns would be the recipients of the weapons, as well as bulletproof vest and helmets, the newspaper reported.

“We will turn the world upside down so that towns are protected. I have given instructions for massively arming the civilian security teams to provide solutions for towns and cities, and so as not to leave towns unprotected,” said Gvir.

Civilians were also taking up weapons they already owned, and clearly were comfortable with, out on the streets or headed to stores.

As of Thursday morning, at least 1,300 people had been killed in Israel, and at least another 1,354 were killed in retaliatory strikes on Gaza since Hamas terrorists launched a surprise blitz at an Israeli music festival where revelers were celebrating the fall harvest Saturday.

Thousands more have been wounded on both sides, according to officials.

The White House said Thursday that 27 Americans were killed in the Hamas attack, with another 14 unaccounted for.
